Ruby Celebration
Examining our heritage, we can say clearly that the Maryknoll reality was born from a need. From the need of a teacher training program for women in the Philippines, an educational mission they began.
Today, it is still the voice of need that speaks the first word of what it means to be a Maryknoller, for those who are Maryknoll/Miriam alums are inspired and compelled to respond to social realities.
Let me share with you some life lessons that I have learned along the way --
If we examine the life journey of highly successful individuals, the defining characteristic is the ability to handle and learn from one's failures. More than IQ and EQ, there is a need to develop grit. It is the ability to persevere to obtain a long term goal or state of being.
There is a constant need for us to collaborate with others that will have an impact for the common good. One cannot continue to enrich one’s self at the expense of another.
Power is neither about the positions held nor the titles given. These do not define us. It is our person that does, the life we live that widens our circles of influence, which inspires and gives hope to others.
None of us here was born a winner. Neither of us too was born a loser. But all of us were born a chooser.
So how do we want to celebrate our Ruby?
We are Marknollers in the sense that we are sisters to one another. We walk with one another. And as we walk, we love and support, we assist and encourage, we touch one another’s hearts and allow our hearts to be touched.
Such is the Maryknoll way.
Ruth lives and works in El Paso, Texas, a border town to Juarez, Mexico. Full of immigrants and migrants.
The Blue and Gold of Maryknoll
Will keep our spirits flying high
Wherever we are, wherever we'll be
Faithful we'll always be to thee
Alma Mater, we'll be true
To your spirits through and through.
We'll sing thy praises, Maryknoll
Thy joy, thy wisdom, and love
Lean onward, heavenward, Maryknoll
God's blessings be yours from above.
Oh, Maryknoll, so fair and true
We pledge our loyalty to you
Witness of Christ throughout the Land
Children of Mary hand in hand
Alma Mater, you will be
Ever fair and dear to me.
Wherever we are, wherever we'll be
Faithful we'll always be to thee
Alma Mater, we'll be true
To your spirits through and through.
We'll sing thy praises, Maryknoll
Thy joy, thy wisdom, and love
Lean onward, heavenward, Maryknoll
God's blessings be yours from above.
Oh, Maryknoll, so fair and true
We pledge our loyalty to you
Witness of Christ throughout the Land
Children of Mary hand in hand
Alma Mater, you will be
Ever fair and dear to me.
